I dag er der mindre end 10 dage til den store åbning af kulturhovedstadsåret 2017. Og en forløsning på det, byen så længe har udviklet på, og vi så længe har set frem til, nærmer sig. På lørdag den 21. januar mellem kl. 19-21 bliver Aarhus midtby forvandlet til en stor arena for et fortryllende show i verdensklasse. FO-Aarhus er med, når vi som partner støtter Europæisk Kulturhovedstad med folkeoplysende midler.

Det bliver ikke mindre end et MEGA EVENT af historisk karakter, når hele midtbyen spærres af lørdag aften den 21. januar til ære for åbningen af 2017. Det bliver en både underholdende, følelsesladet og magisk aften. Vi skal se byens gader blive oplyst af tusindvis af lanterner og lange skibe, høre lyden af tusind stemmers klang og tonerne af nordens ældste kendte folkemelodi "Drømte mig en drøm i nat", og vi skal mærke varmen fra den strøm af mennesker, der er med helt fremme. Indvielsen kulminerer afslutningsvis med en storslået fortælling, der projiceres som tableauer på de store bygninger på Aarhus Havn. Vi håber, at endnu flere store medier med god grund fristes til at sætte Aarhus på listen over byer, man skal besøge i 2017.

Nedtællingen til startskuddet er i gang. Om lidt bliver hele Region Midtjylland forvandlet til en kulturel legeplads, et kulturelt laboratorium under temaet 'Let's Rethink'. Med afsæt heri støtter FO-Aarhus Fonden Aarhus 2017 i at gentænke nuværende konventioner for kunst og kultur; til at styrke vores fælles identitet i regionen, til at opbygge, opleve og deltage i kulturaktiviteter af høj kvalitet; til at ændre spillets regler. I hele 2017 stiller vi blandt andet lokaler, herunder et atelier, gratis til rådighed til projekter, forberedelse, produktioner eller lignende, der understøtter Kulturhovedstaden. HYPHOTHETICALS: Verdens fremtid til debat: Fire store søndagsarrangementer på Aarhus Teater - præsenteret af Aarhus 2017 og Clement Kjersgaard.

Verden står overfor meget store udfordringer og uenigheden er enorm: Hvilke problemer er de vigtigste? Hvad er løsningerne? Og hvem har ansvaret for at gøre tanke til handling?

På fire søndage i 2017 omdannes Aarhus Teater til et forsamlingshus, når Clement Kjersgaard samler en lang række gæster på scenen og i salen. Vi starter om eftermiddagen med de globale perspektiver, og fortsætter om aftenen, hvor vi diskuterer videre i en dansk kontekst.  Det første arrangement finder sted søndag 26. februar med titlen: Vil demokratiet vinde?

I løbet af året kan du blandt andre møde: EU-kommissær Margrethe Vestager, professor Svend Brinkmann, professor Katherine Richardson, forfatter Carsten Jensen, historiker og radiovært Mikael Jalving, professor Eske Willerslev, journalist Noa Redington, fhv. EU-kommissær Connie Hedegaard, aktivist Micah White, formanden for Islands piratparti Birgitta Jonsdottir, debattør Natascha Al-Hariri og videnskabsjournalist Lone Frank.

Alle debatter foregår fra klokken 13.00 til 21.30 på Aarhus Teater. Undervejs er der en spisepause (17-18.30) med buffet.

QUERIES: Do we remain convinced that democracy - as we know it - will spread around the globe? Is new technology most useful for those who wish to remain in power or those who wish to challenge them? Will our definition of (and commitment to) democracy be changed by the challenges of the coming decades?

BACKGROUND: Over the last few years, the steady advance of democratic rights has been dramatically eroded in countries around the world - including nations for whom dictatorship and authoritarianism very recently seemed a thing of the past. In both Europe and the US, new political parties have arisen with a force that testifies to the fact that 'ordinary' people hold very strong (and very conflicting) convictions - inhabiting, according to some observers, altogether different 'fact-worlds'.

QUERIES: Are we returning to a world of borders? Is it a matter for political action to unite the world - and to favour diversity in all aspects of society? And is the distribution of opportunity - in education, health, work and life - served better by an unfettered global market or by nation states?

BACKGROUND: If for a few decades, globalization was seen to create endless possibilities around the world, the years following the financial crises that struck in 2008 have seen a return to contentious debates about growth and inequality. At the same time, a strong and persistent popular protest against multiculturalism has challenged 'political correctness' and 'elitist internationalism' for leaving the real world - and most of its inhabitants - behind.

QUERIES: Will the human race know how to correct its course, if its own survival is unquestionably endangered? If this is indeed the question put to us by global warming, what is the answer?

BACKGROUND: Seven years after the disappointment that was COP15 in Copenhagen, the nations of the world reached a new solemn consensus about the massive problem of climate change at COP21 in Paris. Yet the politicians are still racing to catch up with the scientists, whose warnings grow only darker month by month.

QUERIES: What are the ways in which the world has truly changed over the past 20 years? Have we lost the courage to imagine what the future holds? Will we - when we do move - go fast or slow, alone or together?

BACKGROUND: The global culture that has arisen over the past 30 years celebrates 'disruption' and 'innovation', glorifies the 'rebels' and the 'renegades' for 'breaking barriers' and 'thinking outside the box'. Yet when things suddenly DO change, in unexpected ways, we seem surprised - and we struggle to sort the insignificant from the substantial.
